Panel: The Billion Dollar Question: How to Verify Billion-Gate Designs

Real Intent's CEO, Prakash Narain, will be participating in a DAC conference panel titled The Billion Dollar Question: How to Verify Billion-Gate Designs, which will be held on Wednesday, June 8, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM in Room 33ABC. This panel will discuss what solutions are crucial for verifying designs susceptible to complex failures arising from corner-case confluences of timing and functionality. Intel Sees 15 Billion Devices On The Cloud By 2015

Intel is researching and developing new chip technologies in an effort to self-fulfill its prediction that the cloud will support as many as 15 billion intelligent devices by 2015, a company officials said.

Intel Architecture Group VP Kirk Skaugen on Wednesday told a keynote audience at the Interop technology conference in Las Vegas that the company expects the global economy to be fully wired within the next five years. “It’s aspirational enough, but it’s not far enough out that we can’t see a path,” said Skaugen.

“If it runs on electricity, it will compute, and if it computes it will be connected to the Internet,” said Skaugen. He also predicted that virtually the entire population of the planet would be touched in some way by the cloud in the next half decade—whether they be direct users or just ordinary citizens who benefit from products or research that wouldn’t be possible without the low-cost, high-scalability cloud model.

For the predictions to come true, Skaugen said breakthroughs must be made in the technology that supports the cloud, as well as in cloud architectures and business models. “We’ve had the highest run of Moore’s Law in history,” said Skaugen. “But it’s absolutely not enough to get another billion people connected to the Internet.”

Skaugen said Intel is doing its part by pushing the limits of silicon. The company’s latest breakthrough is the new Tri-Gate 3D transistor. The 22-nanometer technology, which will be incorporated into Intel’s forthcoming Ivy Bridge line of chips, features a three-dimensional planar gate that turbocharges throughput in the “on” state. The upshot is increased performance—up to 37% over Intel’s 32 nm technology—and significantly reduced power consumption, which could make it ideal for mobile devices.

Skaugen said Tri-Gate is part of the equation needed to make the company’s Cloud 2015 vision come true. “We had to change the economics of computing.” Beyond hardware, cloud business models must change if there’s ever to be a worldwide network of compatible clouds that functions much like the Internet. The biggest challenge: At present, clouds from different vendors don’t interoperate. “We can’t let the cloud evolve in a proprietary way,” said Skaugen.

With that in mind, Intel has published a series of in-depth best practices guides to building open clouds. The Intel Cloud Builders papers can be downloaded free from the chipmaker’s Web site. “Lock in is at the top of the list of why people are not moving to the cloud,” said Skaugen.

Germany Backs New Technology Energy 

Inaugurating an offshore wind farm, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on 2 May that her country is offering Euro 5 billion in soft loans to kick-start investment in renewable energy.

Investors had been expecting Berlin to step up soft loans and tax breaks for wind farms as Germany rushes to end its use of nuclear power, possibly within a decade, amid public alarm at the Fukushima disaster in Japan. With Germany embroiled in debate over shutting down its nuclear power plants in the wake of the Fukushima disaster, the issue of boosting the country’s electricity output from renewable sources has gained in importance.

The latest site, Baltic 1, comprises 21 towers in water 16 kilometers offshore and belongs to EnBW, one of the big four utilities. It is Germany’s first on the Baltic Sea, where Denmark and Sweden already have such offshore windpower sites.

Turbines at sea are vulnerable to storms and investors fear many will not last out their projected working life, so government seed money is needed to kick-start the sector and encourage engineers to design tougher plants.

Pressing a button on a jetty at the coastal resort of Zingst to open Baltic 1, Merkel said the loans would be administered by KfW, the federal government’s soft-loans bank, and would foster “new technology,” Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) reported. She said she perceived “a good chance” the program would be approved quickly.

A panel of advisers is currently reviewing the future of nuclear power and is expected to urge an early closedown of all 17 plants in Germany, along with mass building of wind turbines and solar-power collectors to replace them. As it runs out of space for turbines on land, Germany is keen to put up more turbines at sea and in southern Germany, where officials have so far argued that they would mar beautiful scenery. Merkel urged the south to build “a bit more” of the turbines.

The owners claimed the 50-megawatt Baltic 1 was Germany’s first “commercial” wind farm offshore. Last month, a North Sea wind farm, Bard Offshore 1, was opened amid similar claims.

Both claims were a jab at an earlier North Sea wind farm, Alpha Ventus, which was partly paid for from a government science fund. But none of the farms is pure private enterprise, since all are sheltered by legislation and tax breaks.

EnBW took three years to build Baltic 1, rated to produce up to 185 gigawatt-hours of power annually, enough to supply 50,000 households. The company is planning another wind farm, Baltic 2, with 80 turbines offshore, to be completed in 2013. The German federal office for marine shipping BSH in Rostock said that permission has been granted for 23 offshore wind farms in the North Sea with a total installed capacity of 7,650 MW and three in the Baltic Sea with total capacity of 1,040 MW. At the same time, the BSH has received applications for a further 56 North Sea wind farms and 15 in the Baltic Sea.

German Transportation Minister Peter Ramsauer said on 4 May that his country aims to cut bureaucratic red tape that can hold up the construction of offshore windparks by bundling and transferring all responsibility for their approval process to one state authority. “This draft bill is a key first step toward a new energy concept by the federal government,” he said. Should the draft bill be approved by parliament, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) would be the sole authority to decide on new windpark projects.

Previously, a state authority on nature conservancy was charged with reviewing the impact on fish and seabirds — an examination that will now be demoted from a required separate approval to a simple position paper to be submitted to the BSH.

The simplification earned praise from the windpark lobby. “The ambitious target of the federal government to install an offshore wind energy capacity of 10,000 megawatts by 2020 must not fail because differing authorities are jockeying for influence,” said Hermann Albers, head of the German wind energy industry association BWE, whose 3,000 corporate members include Siemens, Vestas and Enercon.

Top 10 Inventions Needed - Future Technology

This was a wish list that was originally intended to provide inspiration for inventors. First written in April of 1997, I thought it might be fun to follow-up each year and find out if anyone has been working on these ideas for future technology. I have included websites for you to "check out" inventions that are, are close to, or kinda close to what I am hoping will soon exist in the technology available to us presently.

1. Future Technology - Free Energy

I want my energy bill to come only once, not every month. So be it solar or electro-magnetic, please make it personal and portable with batteries that keep going and going.

2. Future Technology - Transporter

What kind of technology is required to scramble a person's atoms and send them for regrouping in foreign lands all in the blink of an eye? Imagine, I could work in Tokyo and sleep in Paris. Beam me up.

3. Future Technology - Replicator Technology (Stuff for Free)

Every time I saw Captain Picard (Star Trek Next Generation) ordering his Earl Grey Tea or Councilor Troy getting a triple alien fudge dessert from one of those replicators on the Enterprise, it made me jealous. I imagine you could send the dirty dishes back to the void where they came from. BTW, a replicator is a device that uses transporter technology to dematerialize quantities of matter and then rematerialize that matter in another form.

4. Future Technology - Universal Communicator

Forget long distant bills and roaming charges (especially with me working in Tokyo and sleeping in Paris). I want a very small device that lets me talk and see anyone, anywhere and anytime. All for the price of the device and please throw in the ability for universal translation for a modest surcharge.

5. Future Technology - The Cure

For you name it.

6. Future Technology - Fountain of Youth

As a woman I consider this as a no-brainer desire for future technology. The "Fountain of Youth" was a legendary spring that renders anyone who drinks of its waters permanently young. What is the real future technology that will extend our lives and keep us looking youthful without surgery?

7. Future Technology - Protective Force Field

To shield me from the sticks and stones.

8. Future Technology - Flying Cars

I want a smooth ride all the way and I hope it's a convertible.

9. Future Technology - The Battery Operated Butler Did It

What can I say - housework sucks.

I have a few famous inventors I would love to meet in person and the idea of messing with the time-space continuum is exciting as well.
